Did you know that you can view the Arctic in hill shade? Hill shading is a mapping tool that simulates natural sunlight falling across a landscape. Slopes facing away from the sun are dark, while those facing the sun are bright. Landforms like eskers are plainly visible with a hill shade while they might not be noticeable in a satellite image. The hill shade image above is of the Thelon Esker at Whitewolf Lake.
The Arctic Digital Elevation Model (DEM) can be viewed online for free. and it covers most of the earth above 60deg North.
